After a spastic trip down a couple of steps and a few other misgivings today I was not in the greatest of moods. Austin was out getting the mail that he forgot to get yesterday so he missed the lovely display of grace. The only thing in the mail was a single letter, from the attorney!! We have a court date for Austin’s adoption! November 30th, 2006 at 10:00am. When I told Austin, he went to the calendar and counted the days, can you believe it? How touching! What a touching sentiment of validation that I am doing the right thing.

The other day I heard the term “blood diamond” for the first time and it got me thinking about what people go through just to bring us the diamonds and gold that we wear. It never really occurred to me, before today, that there were alternatives. Check out this website that sells a conflict-free diamond, they also use eco-friendly recycled gold whenever possible. These certified conflict free diamonds, from Brilliant Earth come from Canada, not Africa. They meet fair labor and environmentally responsible practices; they also donate 5% of their profits to the Diamonds for Africa Fund, which directly benefits local African communities directly harmed by the diamond industry. The other nice thing about diamonds from Brilliant Earth is that you do not have to compromise between quality and consciousness, because Brilliant Earth has wonderful custom designers and a wide array of beautiful diamond sizes, cuts, and qualities, as well as many different settings to choose from.

This is what my 10 year old son tells me and he comes running in from the back yard. His expression is that of pure terror as he explains that our shed is full of rats! Moments earlier we had heard him and Christopher screaming like scared little school girls, I figured they were just being loud, but I guess not. So we grab the baby and go outside to find that by “rats”, he means “tiny little harmless field mice” which have moved into the shed to get warm.
Chris was 50 feet away on the deck prancing like a scared housewife, all he needed was a chair and a broom. He told us that he did not want to get diseases, so he was not going to go anywhere near the shed. Austin apparently scared away all the mice as he was moving things around looking for them.
All is now well, I am sure in a few hours the mice will go back home, and in a few days my scaredy cats will get over the trauma of having been “attacked” by “rats”.
Disclaimer: No “rats” or mice were harmed in the making of this blog entry.

Who doesn’t like to save money? I have tried other websites that offer multiple coupons, but have not really found any websites I liked; many of the websites had strings attached. I especially liked these Best Buy Coupons, because everyone KNOWS we live at Best Buy. I bet you will find some great deals if you go take a look!

As much as I would like them to admit it, my cats have a catnip addiction, and they are in complete denial. They think they can quit at any time, but when it is available, they cannot resist eating this addictive herb. They also get possessive and aggressive over their stashes.
Tonight, Matthew got into the pet cupboard and opened a tub of catnip I had and within minutes the kitties were rolling on the kitchen floor, rubbing against Matthew, and Jacob was even laying on his back staring at the undersides of the dining chairs while playing in the rungs with his paws. After such a sweet display over a sprinkle, I figured they could handle a little bit more responsibly.
So Matthew and I called the kitties into the living room and I let him toss a handful on the carpet. Immediately it was a cat-cage-match as they got onto their hind legs and started boxing each other with their front paws. Already I saw trouble brewing, but because I wanted to avoid any casualties, against my better judgment a decided to make a second pile of catnip for Desiree.
After laying on his stash for 20 minutes, Jacob decided to fight Desiree for her pile, and once again there was peace. He finally got back up again and started chasing after invisible-nothingness, and then rubbed all over the dog, who did not appreciate being molested by the cat.
The cats are now blissfully stoned, lying on the couch, being lazy and seemingly satisfied. Tell you what though, after one night of cat craziness, I won’t be rushing to give them catnip anytime soon! F’in lushes!

Since I am on the subject of comedy movies, I thought I should mention a new DVD-of-the-Month Club brought to you by National Lampoon. I think my favorite part of this offer is the “No Repeats Guarantee”, meaning if you already own the DVD they send you, all you have to do is return it and they will ship out out a new one! And for under $60 a year, the DVDs cost less than $5 each! With Christmas coming, I think these would make a perfect gift for my dad, who just loves National Lampoon movies.

Tonight we saw the movie “Click” with Adam Sandler. I honestly did not expect the movie to be as touching as it was. I expected a fluffy comedy with crude jokes and a thin plot, but instead I got a funny, warm, comedy with a great message,
Michael Newman (Adam Sandler) is living the American dream, a beautiful wife (Kate Beckinsale), two kids, a dog, a house, and a car. He is also a hard working architect who cannot seem to balance work and career well, often placing career first. His boss (David Hasselhoff) is very demanding and expects a lot from him, making this juggling act even more difficult. One night, in frustration that he could not seem to synchronise his home entertainment system he sets out in search of a universal remote and instead finds eccentric inventor, Morty (Christopher Walken), who gives him a remote that controls his television set, as well as the people in his life. As he starts using the remote to fast forward through the unpleasant events in his life, he starts to see how much he is really missing in the process, events that he cannot get back. He fears that his life will spin irreversibly out of control unless he can find a way to get it back.
This movie really appealed to me, on of my writing projects in college for my English 202 class was a paper I wrote about longing to have a remote control that worked on Children, specifically the mute and pause buttons. The difference is my paper focused on the positives, such as replaying milestones like the first steps and the first time Austin called me Mommy. However, the movie “Click” put a unique and interesting spin on the remote’s control that reminds us that absolute power often breeds chaos.
Anyways, the movie is out on DVD, you should check it out, I really enjoyed it, and I hope you will too!
