Judging Mommy

Why is it as moms, we naturally judge the parenting skills of other moms, from little things like if her child is dirty, to big things like if she seems like an unfit mom.  I am not saying I am immune, and I know I have defiantly been judged as a parent… but why do we feel it is our place?

I remember one time, about two and a half years ago, I was picking up a framed picture of a birdhouse I had thought about using in my kitchen.  I had been offered this by a woman on my local Freecycle.org website and had made arrangements on a date and time to pick it up.  Instead of her answering the door, a little girl who looked to be about 9 and her little sister who looked to be about 6 answered the door.  I sat outside the door for a total of about 45 minutes and all the while I could hear the kids talking to a mom in an upstairs bedroom, and then heard the kids fumbling around in the garage trying to locate this item.  While all this is taking place I could see three more children in the house, one is a little boy about age 4 who keeps talking to us through the door; I also see a 2 yr old and a 1 yr old (ages are guessed).  However I never once saw a parent.  The kids are all dirty (not filthy), the house is messy (not filthy), and still in pajamas or underwear, despite the fact that it was about 4pm in the afternoon.  Now, when I got home, my first instinct was to call CPS and report this mother.

I decided against it ultimately.  I do not know this mother, therefor I cannot judge.  What if she was having a bad day?  Maybe she was sick with the flu and this was a one time occurrence.  The children looked healthy and well fed, they were not skinny or overly pale like Austin was when he came to us.  The house did not smell from where I was standing on the porch.  Since CPS has to investigate all claims… who was I to judge?  I am not a fan of government intrusion, especially if it is unwarranted.  Depending on the mood of the caseworker assigned, depends on if that mom gets a visit with suggestions on how to improve her situation, to something as drastic as the children being removed.

I know it is easy to look down at young moms, moms with more than 2.3 children, moms who are poor, moms who are overweight, or moms who are overwhelmed and do not discipline enough or too much; but remember, we have all been there.  We have all had bad days, we have all taken kids too the grocery store late at night because we forgot to pick up milk.  We have all taken a dirty child out in public because they were given a sucker at the bank and we could not find our baby wipes.  We have all snapped maybe too much when our child has thrown their 6th tantrum at the store and we are exhausted from 2 hours of sleep the night before.  No mom is perfect, and no mom can be a good mom all the time.  Just remember that the next time you look down your nose at another mom at the grocery store.

What a day!

So I took the older two kids to the doctor’s office this morning; and the strep tests came back positive. While I was waiting, Bobby called to tell me Matthew woke up hot and clingy, so on the way out the door I made him an appointment for later that afternoon. Bobby called his boss and told him he was taking the whole day off, not just the morning, so he could help me. He also called Baby A.’s dad to let him know it was strep, he was planning on bringing her, but called his wife who took the afternoon off so Baby A. would not get exposed.

There are several things that makes me appreciate my husband more. For one he said “Matthew was asking for milk, but with him being sick, I didn’t want him having cow’s milk”. Way to go Daddy! That is a TOTAL mom statement, to hear it coming from him made me want to drag him upstairs right there. So I cuddle Matthew in my arms watching my show “In the Womb: Multiples”; Matthew falls asleep and Bobby and I work on his web page for school. The whole time Bobby keeps offering me to get me something to eat or drink.

So, fast forward to 1:30; I am back at the doctors and everyone is fawning over baby Matthew, who is in his jammies and new bear slippers (Thank you Terri!) and he is dragging the blanket that my mom made for him. He was very cute at the doctors office, it was the first time I saw him actively engaging in pretend play with toys.

So the good news is, Matthew does not have strep (yet), but he does have a cold, and pink eye so the doctor chose to also treat him with penicillin as a treatment and preventative. When I got home, Bobby saw how tired I was and told me to go lay down and he would go to the pharmacy and watch the boys for me. When he came up to check on me he said I was burning up and went to fetch me Tylenol and water without me having to ask. He then asked if I minded him taking off for an hour to go to Taekwondo, I did not have a problem with it and Matthew and I laid in bed watching Sesame Street and napped together.

Austin and Christopher are doing much better. Matthew’s fever is running about 101.6-tympanic and is on Motrin and antibiotics. My fever is staying at around 99.7, and I am still tired, but the nap really helped.

Cute story, since this is getting to be a novel… At 8:30 Matthew waved saying “ni-night” and “upstairs” and then went upstairs. 15 minutes later, Bobby and I went upstairs to check on him; he had turned on the TV, started Sesame Street on the TiVo, and fallen asleep in our bed.

Tackle It Tuesday Meme: Week 3

Tackle It Tuesday Meme

Sorry guys, this tackle is not the best…. just little random stuff that needed to be done, but no big project this week.

  • Got the garbage out and to the curb for tomorrow’s pickup.
  • Washed diapers.
  • Mixed the dog food for the week, and made a chart for weaning the puppy off of her old food onto the new food.
  • Took care of the sicklings.
  • Disinfected various stuff that the sicklings touched.
  • Made the sicklings an appointment for tomorrow.
  • Various picking up.

I am frustrated I could not get more done, but Baby A. did not nap today, and Matthew catnapped.

Pass the alcohol…

and I don’t mean scotch, vodka, or tequilla… I mean RUBBING alcohol, for the thermometer silly!

All the kids are sick… it started the day before yesterday with Christopher, then Austin last night, and now Matthew, though I don’t think Matthew knows it yet. It started with a fever, then coughing, then puking (for Christopher), and a sore throat, and now Christopher has lost his voice. Matthew just has a slight fever and a little cough, so I am hoping he does not get sick.

So as of 3 pm today, the fever race is as follows:

Austin taking first place at 101.1
Christopher close behind at 101.0
and Matthew at 99.6
I am at 98.4 so I am hoping I will be OK.

Austin & Christopher have a doctor’s appointment at 9 am tomorrow morning, so I hope I know more then. I have yet to see either child out of bed yet.

Cell Phones

In light of our recent cell phone fiasco, I got thinking about how easy it is to get free phones when you are a new customer, but how expensive the same phones are if you need a replacement phone. However with so many phones, rates, plans and companies there are out there, websites like Wirefly are great for side by side comparison shopping, and how to find the best deals on phones. Check out this list of the 10 most popular cell phones. The phone I have is the Motorola RAZR with Verizon; it is a decent phone with decent features, decent reception, and a slim case that easily fits in my pocket or purse.

I chose Verizon for the network, but I also like their family plans; network is important to us because we both travel often. He flies all over they country (mostly to Texas) and I frequently drive through Wyoming, Montana, Idaho and Washington, and getting reception in WY, MT, and ID is pretty difficult on other providers, however I would chose another company if it fit our needs better, as it is important to chose the plan that works best for you. This is WHY I love side by side comparison shopping available on Wirefly.com, this way you can see an unbiased comparison without a salesperson pressuring you to chose their company.

The Van

…went back to the shop on Friday morning, I was certain they would tell me they could not find the leak again. So the dealer called this afternoon when I was laying in bed catching up on my shows that record upstairs and Bobby comes up to tell me they found the leak; they are replacing the seal, and the warranty DOES cover it… thank goodness!! I just need this car to last two more years until it is paid off, possibly less if I triple the payment next year when the car is paid off.

Fun Stuff to Check out in Denver

My city does not have the greatest reputation of having a night life… in fact if you want to go clubbing, you best take a designated driver and head up to Denver, since that is where you will find the night scene.

The club that is getting all the attention is Cherry Street Live, at 4501 E. Virginia Ave. in Glendale, CO. The neat thing about this club, is that it is in the same location as a historic club in the 80′s and 90′s called the Bangles.

There is a lot of great stuff about Cherry Street Live, which is a giant 3 level club with 2 separate bars, a VIP section, and ample parking. Wednesday nights are Back 2 Bangles night, with beer being either free or $1 depending on the original price, or $4 shots of Jager.

Don’t miss out on January 31st, when Bangles will be having a Slayer after party.

Best Date Night EVER!

About a week ago, Bobby and I were talking about Josh Blue, the comedian with Cerebral Palsy who won Last Comic Standing; we were basically wondering what he is doing now. Friday morning we were driving home from dropping off my van, and he was putting gas in the car when I heard an advertisement for Josh Blue, in Concert, Saturday! After securing childcare for the night we were able to get two tickets.

I have to say, I LOVED Josh Blue on LCS, but in person, he is 100x better! For one, he was able to say things he couldn’t on TV, and for two, it was incredible HOW much of his routine is interacting with the audience. There were 2,000 people, but he still turned on the lights and did a Q&A section with the audience so they could ask him questions. He also flirted with a woman in the audience and talked to the baby in the front row. Since Josh is from Denver, we got to see some other local talent from an hour up north… there was a band, and three other comedians… all were great.

Our friends who watched the boys kept Christopher and Austin overnight, and they had a blast. The baby zonked out as soon as we got home, and slept in until 10am. The older two got back around 11 and brought their friend back with them to take a turn sleeping here tonight. Except for getting up twice to take the puppy out, I got to sleep in until 10 and Bobby got up at 9.

PayPerPost

I am always telling people how much I love PayPerPost and that I work two jobs at home… The harder job of the two is watching three month old baby A. for four hours a day. Since the dad is a good friend of Bobby’s, and I only watch her part time, I hardly charge them anything; they are easily saving $75-100 a week on daycare by having me watch her, since I only charge $50 a week. But she is a good baby and it does not interfere with my schedule so I don’t mind.

My other job is blogging for cash for PayPerPost.com and it is SUPER easy work for good pay. If you have a blog, or multiple blogs that are 90 days old, you post regularly, and meet the other simple guidelines; you two can get paid for doing something you love.

Since starting in with PayPerPost in October I have been paid: $976.89 and have almost $200 pending payment right now. This is money I have used to pay off credit card debt, as well as buy fun things like Christmas gifts.

What I love about PayPerPost is that I never spend more than an hour to make my money, in fact on average it takes me 20 minutes a day (when I blog) to make between $10-30; talk about a part-time job!

Photo Hunter: Week 5

PSHunt

This week’s theme is: Technology

Well, this may not be the most exciting picture but it is my Toshiba Satellite A105-S4094.

The processor is an Intel Core Duo T2250 / 1.73 GHz, 1 x 1 GB + 512 MB RAM, the Hard Drive. has 120 GB, and it has a double-layer DVD burner; a wide 15.4-inch display with a 1,280×800 native resolution, and various types of Wi-Fi cards.

Since I listen to so much music, I have a pair of USB powered external Logitech speakers, an external wireless mouse, and I put it on a cooling pad which includes 4 extra USB ports (for a total of 8).

The background image on the screen is the Queen Victoria Building, Sydney.
